Forty-nine milkfish, each weighing between 3 to 5 kilograms, were recently acquired by SEAFDEC/AQD for conditioning at its Tigbauan Main Station to augment its stock of milkfish breeders for its research projects.

The hatchery technique was devised by Dr. Frolan A. Aya, a scientist of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, and granted a patent by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) last Oct. 17, 2019.

Support is mounting for the revival of tiger shrimp farming in the Philippines as another 4.4 tons of the prized seafood were recently harvested in Dumangas, Iloilo.

With its premium taste and superior economic value, tiger shrimp is being pushed as an alternative species to farm alongside the popular whiteleg shrimp or vannamei.

A recent harvest of almost three tons of tiger shrimp, locally known as lukon or sugpo, lifts hopes of reviving the multi-million dollar industry which last saw its heydey in the ‘90s.
