Thai fisheries staff train at SEAFDEC/AQD to boost milkfish production

Three fisheries biologists from Thailand’s Department of Fisheries (DOF) enhanced their skills in milkfish aquaculture through a specialized training course at SEAFDEC/AQD, supporting efforts to improve milkfish production in Thailand.

From 3 to 14 March 2025, the training covered aspects essential to milkfish aquaculture, such as hatchery site selection, milkfish culture in earthen ponds and culture in sea cages, water quality monitoring and management, and natural food culture. Also, they learned about milkfish diseases and management, biosecurity measures for hatcheries, and feed formulation.

“SEAFDEC/AQD is a valuable resource for aquaculture knowledge, with personnel who are experts in the field,” said Supakant Chaichotranunt, a fishery biologist, adding that the training provided them with insights, hands-on experience, and in-depth understanding of the entire milkfish production process.

The lectures and practical sessions took place at SEAFDEC/AQD’s Tigbauan Main Station, Dumangas Brackishwater Station, and Igang Marine Station. As part of the training, participants attended sessions at the Institute of Fish Processing Technology, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the University of the Philippines Visayas, where they learned about post-harvest processing and value-added milkfish products.
