The Aquatic News Index is an initiative of the SEAFDEC/AQD Library to improve the accessibility of current and historical news articles on aquatic science and to preserve them in digital form.

Over a hundred fish farmers and other stakeholders availed of free lectures and consultations on 11 July 2018 at SEAFDEC/AQD’S Multi-Purpose Hall in Tigbauan, Iloilo.

Digital fisheries library devices were turned over to 14 state colleges and universities from around the Philippines during its Book Launching Ceremony on 12 July 2018 in commemoration of its 45th Anniversary.

The database was launched during the Book Launching ceremonies as part of SEAFDEC/AQD’s 45th anniversary celebration on 12 July 2018.

“If done right, aquaculture can be the sustainable platform for creating wealth and environmental sustainability in the rural fishing communities,” says Joseph Martin Borromeo, president of the Philippine Association of Fish Producers Inc.

The manual “Biology and Hatchery of Mangrove Crabs Scylla spp.” was launched during SEAFDEC/AQD’s 27th Book Launching last 12 July 2018 at the SEAFDEC/AQD Multi-Purpose Hall.

SEAFDEC/AQD organized the international training, with funding support from the Government of Japan Trust Fund (GOJ-TF), to enable Southeast Asian countries to initiate resource enhancement activities or improve their current programs.

A 15-day training course on “Sandfish Seed Production, Nursery, and Management” held from April 5 to April 20, 2018, in Tigbauan, Iloilo.

Congressman Scott Davies Lanete of the third district of Masbate visited SEAFDEC/AQD in 15 March 2018 to explore a possible linkage towards developing aquaculture in Masbate.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources tapped the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center in a P10 million project to conduct surveys and prepare development plans for the establishment of 15 multi-species fish hatcheries around the Philippines.

Mr. and Mrs. Rito Bombeo, retired researchers of SEAFDEC/AQD continue to promote aquaculture in Naawan, Misamis Oriental.

A SEAFDEC/AQD study suggests that fruits peels can be used as additives for tilapia feed.

An organization of young professionals in Mindoro, ventured into crab farming and partnered with the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center - Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) in organizing a training course on crab culture for fish farmers in Mindoro.

SEAFDEC/AQD will conduct surveys and trainings this year towards establishing mangrove crab seed banks, nurseries and grow-out production farms in Catanduanes.

External evaluators applauded the Japan-funded studies of SEAFDEC/AQD presented during the “2017 Annual Progress and Planning Meeting on the Promotion of Sustainable Aquaculture and Resource Enhancement in Southeast Asia,” on 9 February 2018.

Shrimp farmers are advised not to stock their ponds during cold months from November to February because shrimp get stressed when temperatures dip below 27°C, predisposing them to diseases.

Dan D. Baliao has been appointed to head the Aquaculture Department (AQD) of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) effective 7 September 2017.

The new Multi-Purpose Hall of SEAFDEC/AQD was inaugurated during the opening program of its 44th anniversary celebration on July 3, 2017.
