The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) launched its first training course on oyster hatchery operations, equipping aquaculture practitioners from three countries with practical hatchery skills to support sustainable oyster farming.     ROXAS City – To boost the local aquaculture industry, SEAFDEC/AQD Chief Dan Baliao said abandoned and underutilized hatcheries in the province should be rehabilitated to produce much-needed crablets and fish fry. He said this during a dialogue with local fish farmers who aired that there were not enough suppliers of crablets that they seed into their fishpond. “The problem here in Capiz is that our crablets come from Bicol, Sarangani, and Cagayan Valley. How about us here in Capiz?” asked Ma. Cristina Dyna Honrado, vice-chair of the Capiz Aquaculture Producers Cooperative. To help bolster the supply of seafood and sustain the development of the fish farming industry during a pandemic, SEAFDEC/AQD is fast-tracking the development of online training courses. Distance learning courses are conducted through online learning platforms, where participants can access lecture notes, instructional materials, activities, and even examinations.

To enhance the capacity of local high school science teachers, a training on research methodology and technical writing was organized with funding support from the Government of Japan.

Due to the growing popularity of mangrove crab as an aquaculture commodity, SEAFDEC/AQD conducted several training courses on mangrove crab culture.

PANABO City, Davao del Norte – Various aspects of milkfish culture and production were discussed in a  free four-day on-site training course from 15 to 18 October 2019 at the National Mariculture Center here.

SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources conducted an on-site training on freshwater aquaculture in Kabacan, Cotabato last 25-28 February 2019.
