Aquafarmers from Capiz province, dubbed “the seafood capital of the Philippines,” are feeling the sting of the pandemic as transport restrictions have driven down prices given the difficulties in distributing their milkfish, crab, and shrimp produce.

Support is mounting for the revival of tiger shrimp farming in the Philippines as another 4.4 tons of the prized seafood were recently harvested in Dumangas, Iloilo.

PANABO City, Davao del Norte – Various aspects of milkfish culture and production were discussed in a  free four-day on-site training course from 15 to 18 October 2019 at the National Mariculture Center here.

“The Philippines’ aquaculture industry needs to improve aggressively and this country is hungry for results,” BFAR director Eduardo Gongona said during the 27th PTAC Meeting last 17 October 2018 in Makati City, Philippines

An organization of young professionals in Mindoro, ventured into crab farming and partnered with the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center - Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) in organizing a training course on crab culture for fish farmers in Mindoro.

SEAFDEC/AQD will conduct surveys and trainings this year towards establishing mangrove crab seed banks, nurseries and grow-out production farms in Catanduanes.

Philippine Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel “Manny” Piñol expressed support to SEAFDEC/AQD and advised officials of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to more closely coordinate with its experts.
