Scientist highlights Philippine freshwater prawn farming at Giant Prawn 2025 in China

A team from SEAFDEC/AQD, led by Scientist Dr. Sheryll Avanceña, participated in the Giant Prawn 2025 Conference and Exposition held on 8–11 June 2025 in Huzhou, China.

Dr. Avanceña served as a key speaker at the event, presenting the status and trends in freshwater prawn farming in the Philippines, with her presentation titled, “Propelling Progress in Giant Freshwater Prawn Farming in the Philippines: A Status Report.”

In her talk, she emphasized the significance of continuous training and information dissemination to further promote farming of the species, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, which is indigenous to the Philippines and widely distributed across its extensive inland water resources.

The SEAFDEC/AQD team also visited the Zhejiang Aquatic Seed Industry Co., Ltd, a leading agricultural technology enterprise that is revolutionizing prawn farming, serving as a national model enterprise driving innovation, sustainability, and economic growth in China’s aquatic seed industry.

In addition to Dr. Avanceña, the SEAFDEC/AQD delegation included Associate Researcher Marwin De la Cruz and Hatchery Assistants Janice Tambirao and Therese Marie Geanga.

The Giant Prawn Conferences are the premier global events dedicated to the farming of freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium spp.). Giant Prawn 2025 is the 7th Conference in the series, jointly organized by Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, and Shanghai Ocean University, China, in collaboration with the Zhejiang Institute of Freshwater Fisheries and Huzhou University, China.
