Learning online isn’t just for students, it is also for the Philippines’ aquaculture extension workers who listened to lectures and practical sessions on milkfish and mangrove crab culture via an online platform. Forty-eight participants, mostly staff of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) from the different administrative regions, recently completed the FishKwela Training Course to enhance their skills on the hatchery production of milkfish and mangrove crab. Losses experienced by some crab farmers in the Philippines were traced to the very low survival of crablets that were misidentified as the popular king crab

High mortalities experienced by crab farmers in Capiz Province in the Philippines have been linked to the high turbidity of Panay River and poor quality of trash fish which is fed to the crabs.

Due to the growing popularity of mangrove crab as an aquaculture commodity, SEAFDEC/AQD conducted several training courses on mangrove crab culture.

As part of SEAFDEC/AQD’s anniversary celebrations, a Farmers’ Forum and Aquaculture Clinic were held for fish farmers and the private sector on 10 July 2019 at SEAFDEC/AQD’s Multi-Purpose Hall in Tigbauan, Iloilo from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mangrove crab continued to be an important commodity among aquafarmers in Asian countries including the Philippines as shown by the high demand for training on the culture of the prized commodity.

The manual “Biology and Hatchery of Mangrove Crabs Scylla spp.” was launched during SEAFDEC/AQD’s 27th Book Launching last 12 July 2018 at the SEAFDEC/AQD Multi-Purpose Hall.

SEAFDEC/AQD will conduct surveys and trainings this year towards establishing mangrove crab seed banks, nurseries and grow-out production farms in Catanduanes.
