Ma. Junemie Hazel L. Lebata-Ramos joined the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) in 1993 as Technical Assistant I and rose to the ranks until she becamea Scientist in 2008. She was designated as Head of the Department’s Research Division from August 2013 to April 2015 and Head of the Training and Information Division from April 2015 to September 2017. Her past and present research works include studies on the biology, ecology, assessment, and rehabilitation of mangroves; biology, ecology, assessment, stock enhancement and culture of mollusks (abalone, oyster, giant clam, angelwing clam, and toothless lucine) and crustaceans (Scylla spp. and penaeid shrimps); and integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA) from which she has published several scientific papers as senior author or co-author. Her research projects have been funded by Ayala Corporation, the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS), the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD), the Government of Japan Trust Fund, and the European Commission. In 2009, she was a recipient of the Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers for her work on the Stock Enhancement of Commercially Important and Threatened Marine Invertebrates in Tropical Areas. In the same year, her paper on the stock enhancement of Scylla spp. won the Elvira O. Tan Memorial Award for Best Published Paper in Aquaculture and Inland Fisheries Category. In 2012, she received the UP Alumni Association, Inc. (Iloilo Chapter) Outstanding Professional Award for Fishery and Ocean Sciences. Over the past ten years, her work focused on developing and refining grow-out culture techniques for oysters and abalone. In 2017, one of her outputs won 2nd place in the World Oyster Society Early Stage Investigator Award during the 7th International Oyster Symposium, held in Wales, United Kingdom. She earned her B.S. in Biology and M.Sc. in Fisheries Biology from the University of the Philippines Visayas in 1992 and 1999, respectively, while her Ph.D. in Ocean Sciences from the University of Wales, Bangor in the United Kingdom in 2007.
