SEAFDEC/AQD conducted an online training course on Giant Freshwater Prawn Hatchery and Grow-out Operations on 16–20 March 2026 for 13 participants from various countries.
The training aimed to enhance participants’ technical knowledge and skills in freshwater prawn production and to equip them with insights for sustainable aquaculture development in their respective countries and sectors.
The participants were government officers, fisheries professionals, and private individuals from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, Viet Nam, the United States, and the Philippines.
The five-day course through the Zoom platform delivered lectures on the freshwater prawn industry, economic analysis of hatchery and grow-out operations, and biosecurity measures in hatcheries.
Furthermore, video presentations were used to demonstrate practical sessions, including water quality management, freshwater prawn hatchery operations, and broodstock management.
This course is SEAFDEC/AQD’s first online training on giant freshwater prawn culture and drew over 100 applicants. However, participation was limited to ensure a more effective learning experience. Face-to-face training sessions are scheduled in May, to be held at the Binangonan Freshwater Station, in Rizal, and Tigbauan Main Station, in Iloilo, to provide hands-on experience to the next trainees.
