To make research-and-development in fisheries more responsive to the needs of its 11 member-countries, SEAFDEC convened two meetings to work out its 2012 activities, including collaboration with ASEAN. AQD and DA-BFAR hosted these meetings in Manila from 14 to 18 November.

On 25 November, SEAFDEC/AQD will be selling milkfish harvested from its Igang Marine Station. Sizes 350 g and below are priced at Php 95 per kg while sizes 400 g and above cost Php 110 per kg. SEAFDEC/AQD organized two on-site training on mud crab culture and fish health management in Myanmar and Lao PDR, respectively. The mud crab training was held from 26 September to 1 October; while fish health training was conducted from 11-14 October. Both training were funded by the Government of Japan Trust Fund.

SEAFDEC/AQD passed the Ring test or Inter-laboratory calibration organized by the Aquaculture Pathology Laboratory, Department of Veterinary Science and Microbiology of the University of Arizona, USA, headed by Dr. Donald Lightner. AQD promotes good aquaculture practices through early disease detection using reliable test methods.

Around 500 kg of milkfish will be harvested from SEAFDEC/AQD’s Igang Marine Station (IMS) on 18 November. The retail price per kg of sizes 350 g and below is Php 95 while sizes 400 g and above cost Php 110. The international seminar Environment-friendly aquaculture and stock enhancement in Southeast Asia will take place at SEAFDEC/AQD in Iloilo, Philippines on 1 December 2011. Organized by the Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, Hokkaido University in Japan, the seminar will include presentations by AQD researchers who received study grants from the Japan society for the promotion of science through its Asia-Africa science platform program.
