Regional Technical Consultation on Stock Enhancement of Species under International Concern (July 13 - 15, 2005)

To be invited as participants in the Regional Technical Consultation are representatives from the ASEAN-SEAFDEC member countries and relevant SEAFDEC Departments as well as representatives from non-government organizations (NGOs) and regional organizations. Review papers will be sought from resource persons on stock enhancement initiatives in Japan as well as in other countries.

Representatives from the ASEAN-SEAFDEC member countries are expected to present country papers on status of stock enhancement activities in their respective countries. The expected output of the Regional Seminar-Workshop shall include future direction of the Program, status of seed production and release strategies, and socio-economic analysis of stock enhancement.

Research on Strategies for Sea Ranching and Stock Enhancement

Research projects for 2005-2008 shall include: (1) Quality seed production of species identified; (2) Release and stock enhancement strategies; and (3) Costs and benefits of stock enhancement. An assessment of potential sites for stock enhancement of different species, including social preparation of coastal communities, would be conducted in selected areas in the region. A socio-economic evaluation of the acceptability of the sea ranching and stock enhancement would also be conducted.

Verification of Developed and Established Technologies

Verification projects for 2005-2008 shall include: (1) Pilot testing of the hatchery and release technologies; and (2) Monitoring and evaluation of the impact of the stock enhancement program. The pilot testing activities would focus on the socially acceptable and economically feasible technologies for sea ranching and stock enhancement in various sites in the SEAFDEC member countries. This will be followed by the development of criteria and monitoring techniques of the success of releases and recovery of targeted species populations.

Training and Information Dissemination on Stock Enhancement

After verification of the research results under the program, training courses will be designed and pilot-tested at AQD, incorporating also the learnings from similar research and training courses conducted by other organizations. A manual or book on stock enhancement experiences will be produced at the end of the Program.
