Four culture methods are presented: fixed off-bottom, raft long-line (single or multiple), hanging long line, and polyculture of seaweeds with carnivorous fishes. The Filipino version, Pag-aalaga ng halamang-dagat na Kappaphycus (2007), is also available.

This 55-page manual is considered one of the important outputs of a Government of Japan Trust-funded project which aims to come up with guidelines for the prudent use of antibiotics. It details the test for bacterial susceptibility and resistance using simple techniques (eg. disk-agar diffusion tests), and the test for therapeutic levels using microbial inhibitory concentration.

Environment-Friendly Schemes in Intensive Shrimp Farming

A 25-page manual detailing the procedures of intensive shrimp farming but with provisos for the treatment of sludge and water. These provisos include (1) the use of water reservoir where pond water is stored for at least a week before being used in the grow-out ponds, (2) the use of "tail" pond to hold drained water so it can be treated and recycled, (3) the use of long-arm paddle wheel so water aeration-circulation is made more efficient, and (4) the use of fishes to help condition the water and substantially produce green water.

Closed Recirculating Shrimp Farming System

A 27-page manual detailing the procedures of intensive shrimp farming through a closed culture system. By minimizing and even avoiding altogether the discharge of organic matter and nutrients from the grow-out into the natural water, the adverse environmental impact often associated with intensive shrimp farming is avoided. This system also features treatment pond where waste water is treated first before it is returned to the grow-out ponds.

Recent Developments in the Genetic Improvement of the Giant Freshwater Prawn (Macrobrachium sp.)

This publication contains results from the research project “Development of Genetically Improved Strain of Macrobrachium” covered by the Program on the Promotion of Sustainable Aquaculture in the ASEAN Region (previously known as Integrated Rural Aquaculture Program). It specifically includes activities from the inception of the project in 2002 up to 2005 under the Special Five-year Program on Sustainable Fisheries for Food Security in the ASEAN Region as well as research updates from 2006 to date. Project
activities from 2006 to 2010 have been placed under the ASEAN-SEAFDEC Fisheries Consultative Group (FCG) collaborative mechanism with financial support from the Government of Japan Trust Fund. Dr. Koichi Okuzawa, AQD’s Deputy Chief from 2005-2007, was project leader at the time the studies started until early 2007.

  Conservation and Ecological Management of Philippine Lakes in Relation to Fisheries and Aquaculture

This volume documents the proceedings of the national seminar-workshop held October 21-23, 1997 in Quezon City which was co-organized by SEAFDEC/AQD, PCAMRD and DA-BFAR. The proceedings contains three plenary papers: (1) SEAFDEC contribution to the ecological awareness of Philippine lakes, (2) sustainable development of lake resources and the R&D agenda, and (3) aquaculture practices and their impact on lakes. Eleven technical papers discussed Lake Mahagnao in Leyte, Laguna de Bay, Lake Sebu in South Cotabato, Naujan Lake in Mindoro, Lake Danao in Cebu, Lake Buhi in Camarines Sur, Taal Lake in Taal. Abstracts of 13 other papers and posters are included in the volume.
