RESOLUTION
ON THE INTEGRATION OF MANGROVE EDUCATION
IN THE REVITALIZED BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM (RBEC)
AND TERTIARY EDUCATION CURRICULUM
We, the
participants of the Mangrove Education Seminar-Workshop held
1-5 May 2005 at the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development
Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) in Tigbauan,
Iloilo and sponsored by the Pew Fellows Program in Marine
Conservation recognize that:
-
Mangroves
are a vital part of our life support system, providing a
variety of goods (e.g., food, beverages, fuel, timber,
medicines) from forestry and fisheries;
-
Mangroves
also provide many services such as coastal protection
(from natural calamities e.g., typhoons and tsunamis),
erosion control, flood regulation, support to fisheries,
wildlife habitat, and nutrient recycling;
-
Mangrove
habitats in Panay and Guimaras Islands are highly degraded
resulting in declining food supply and incomes; and
-
Education is
a vehicle towards the rational management of the mangroves
of Panay and Guimaras Islands;
We hereby
resolve:
-
To advocate
rehabilitation and sustainable management of the mangroves
of Panay and Guimaras Islands; and
-
To educate
the Filipino youth on the importance of mangroves and
their conservation;
We therefore
call on the Department of Education and the Commission on
Higher Education to issue memoranda effecting the integration
of mangrove themes in the Revitalized Basic Education
Curriculum and Tertiary Education Curriculum, respectively.
Signed this 5th day of May 2005 at Tigbauan, Iloilo,
Philippines.
