A seminar-workshop on Mangrove Education was held at the SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department in Tigbauan, Iloilo last 2-4 May 2005 and attended by 23 teacher-educators from public and private schools in Panay Island. The seminar-workshop was collaboration among SEAFDEC/AQD, the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) of Region 6, and funded by the Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation. Participants came from one primary, 10 secondary and 12 tertiary schools in the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz and Iloilo. There were two observers.

The seminar-workshop started with technical lectures on "Coastal Marine Ecosystems" by Dr. Jurgenne H. Primavera and "The Mangroves of Panay" by Dr. Resurreccion B. Sadaba. These were followed by lectures on the educational system: "The Status of Mangrove Education at the Elementary and Secondary Levels" by Dr. Lourdes N. Morano; "Developing a Science Culture Through Science Research" by Dr. Josette T. Biyo; "The New General Education Curriculum" by Dr. Victor E. Navarra; and "The Status of Mangrove Education in a Science-Related Curriculum" by Dr. Liah C. Catedrilla. A visit to FishWorld, the SEAFDEC/AQD Museum and hatchery tanks, and a film clip about mangroves capped the day

The group left early the next morning for a field trip to Aklan province. Two sites were visited - one with naturally-occurring mangroves in Brgy. Jawili, Tangalan and the 73-hectare mangrove plantation in New Buswang, Kalibo. Participants were divided into two groups, each headed by Dr. Primavera and Dr. Sadaba to facilitate field observations and discussion. Assignments were given for the next day's activities.

The workshop proper on 4 May 2005 was coordinated by Dr. Aurora Fe Bautista of the Department of Professional Education, UP in the Visayas. Participants were divided into five subgroups - 3 secondary and 2 college.

A position paper was prepared and a new organization was set up both with the goal of integrating mangroves in the formal educational system. Each group presented recommendations  and personal commitments.
