With funding from a Pew
Fellowship in Marine Conservation that aims to conserve
mangroves through education (and governance), the West
Visayas State University in Iloilo City was commissioned to
prepare instructional modules on mangroves (and other marine
habitats) for primary and secondary school levels. Following
a Memorandum of Agreement signed between Pew and the WVSU in
June 2006, a group of WVSU teachers have prepared 5 and 4
modules for elementary and high school, respectively.
In November 2006, a
preliminary testing of the draft modules was conducted in
Tangalan, Aklan with 10 pupils from 2 elementary schools and
10 students from 2 high schools. A year later, the revised
modules were pilot-tested again in Tangalan, Aklan but with
a fresh batch of students from 3 primary and 2 high schools.
The schools are the Ibajay Elementary School, Jawili
Elementary School, Tangalan Elementary School, Anselmo B.
Legaspi National High School, and Maloco National High
School.
The 11-13 October 2007
Pilot-Testing started with an orientation and distribution
of students into 9 groups for each of the teacher-writers
(Appendix III). Modules were tested in the classroom and
field (beach, mangrove, market, etc.) practicals in the next
two days. Some modules featured showing of the video
Sinaya’s World and the film Muro-Ami.
Total budget was P50,275.15
covering travel and living expenses of 9 WVSU
teacher-writers, 2 Pew staff and 1 driver plus
snacks/lunch/local transportation for the students and their
chaperones.
