SEAFDEC/AQD at 40: Improving lives through sustainable aquaculture

To reach out to its stakeholders, SEAFDEC/AQD was in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines to join the “20^thPanaad sa Negros Festival also dubbed as the “Festival of all festivals” that was held 8-14 April.

SEAFDEC/AQD’s senior information assistant Mr. Daryl Superio was in Bangkok, Thailand from 18 to 22 March to undergo training on “ASFA (Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts) input procedures”.

“The development of human civilization hinges upon the ability to develop technologies and understand risks,” noted DA Undersecretary Hon. Segfredo Serrano, chair of the DA biotech program steering committee. “What we need are biotechnologies safeguarded by a good, open regulatory system to manage risks.”

AQD Chief Dr. Felix Ayson, along with Deputy Chief Dr. Teruo Azuma, and Ms. Belen Acosta (special departmental coordinator) attended the 2013 program review / meeting on the SEAFDEC Japanese Trust Fund programs held on 1 March in Bangkok, Thailand.

“With the future of our country depending on innovators who are to come from universities and R&D institutions, IP or intellectual property can earn you millions and make your dreams come true,” said Atty. Ricardo Blancaflor, Director-General of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) during the Foundation course on IP held 7-8 March in Iloilo City by IPOPHIL in collaboration with the Western Visayas College of Science & Technology.

Two NFRDI (National Fisheries Research and Development Institute of DA-BFAR) technical staff completed the five-day specialized course on algal culture which started on 18 February at SEAFDEC/AQD’s main station in Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines.

“In behalf of the Government of Japan, I would like to express my sincere respect to all the activities conducted by AQD researchers,” said Mr. Tetsuya Murakami during the Annual progress meeting of the program under the ASEAN-SEAFDEC Consultative group mechanism funded by the Government of Japan Trust Fund (GOJ-TF) in SEAFDEC/AQDheld 12-13 February.

Four BFAR (Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources) technical staff coming from Iloilo (1), Negros Occidental (1) and Antique (2) completed the 10-day training on Seaweed nursery techniques which concluded on 13 February at SEAFDEC/AQD’s main station in Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines.

On 17 January, 71 milkfish broodstock were sampled at AQD’s Integrated Fish Broodstock Hatchery Complex in Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines.

A hatchery manager and a seaman completed the two-week course on grouper hatchery which started on 14 January at SEAFDEC/AQD’s main station in Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines.

SEAFDEC / AQD renewed its agreement with the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) on 28 January at its main station in Tigbauan, Iloilo.

For the year 2012, SEAFDEC/AQD published 25 scientific papers in ISI-CC covered journals and conference proceedings which add up to a total of 1,388 scientific papers since 1973.
