New GOJ-TF direction on aquaculture

Beginning 2015, AQD will work on two new programs to be funded by GOJ-TF (Government of Japan Trust Fund): (1) environment-friendly, sustainable utilization & management of fisheries & aquaculture resources and (2) reinforcement & optimization of fish health management & its effective dissemination. These were presented at the 4th meeting of SEAFDEC program review for Japanese Trust Fund V and identification of prioritized issues for future regional program formulation which was held 25-26 February in Bangkok and hosted by SEAFDEC Secretariat.

The meeting reviewed the projects implemented in 2013 and discussed the activities for 2014 and the proposed projects from 2015 to 2019, the sixth cycle of GOJ-TF. The external evaluators were (1) former AQD Chief Dr. R Platon, (2) former SEAFDEC Deputy Secretary General and TD Deputy Chief Dr. J Okamoto and (3) Thailand’s Department of Fisheries advisor Dr. O Pawaputanon. The evaluation were based on these criteria: achievements based on goals, outputs & benefits to beneficiaries, and efficiency of budget spending.

The evaluators expressed appreciation to AQD and other SEAFDEC Departments for implementing projects that were very useful and beneficial to member-countries. AQD was requested to accelerate the dissemination/transfer of its technologies through collaborative undertakings, training, and publications. For the proposed new programs under GOJ-TF VI (2015-2019), AQD and other Departments were asked to prioritized emerging issues in Southeast Asia.

Joining the representatives from member-countries, SEAFDEC Secretariat and Departments were AQD Chief Dr. Felix Ayson, Deputy Chief & GOJ Trust Fund co-manager Dr. Teruo Azuma and special departmental coordinator Ms. Belen Acosta.
