By Development Communication Section

Aquaculture stakeholders reviewed the draft document on the ASEAN Good Aquaculture Practices (GAqP) on 17 January 2014 in Iloilo City. The technical consultation meeting was hosted by DA-BFAR (Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources).

The Philippines (through BFAR) was assigned as the lead country for the establishment of GAqP upon the directive from the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The meeting is part of a series of national consultations in all ASEAN member states under the ASEAN-Australia Development Cooperation Programme Phase II (AADCPII) project.

AQD Chief Dr. Felix Ayson, research head Dr. Ma. Junemie Hazel Lebata-Ramos, technology verification & demonstration head Dr. Mae Catacutan, and training & information head Dr. Evelyn Grace de Jesus-Ayson represented AQD.

It is to be noted that, based on the 1995 FAO code, SEAFDEC in early 2000 consulted, formulated and published the “Regional guidelines for responsible fisheries in Southeast Asia – responsible aquaculture” which focused on industry realities in the context of Southeast Asia.
